Her work is profoundly influenced by Modernism, as she does not merely seek to paint the surface of objects, rather she searches for the essence of the matters. Growing up in the Chinese culture, her work is also influenced by the affinity she feels for Eastern Spirituality – seeking order from chaos, clarity from complexity and depicting “Chi” – the flow of life energy that articulates the tension, balance and grace in nature.

Artist Reception for Stephanie Han Saturday, June 11th
"The dictionary defines interstices as “an intervening space, esp. a very small one.” It made me think of the small, sudden intervals of time when certain memories become very vivid, whether they are happy or sad. Even as time and new experiences put those memories deeper into your subconscious, they can suddenly come roaring back through the small lingering spaces in your thoughts, as fresh and sharp as the moment they were created.
This is my first purely abstract series. I was never inclined to work in this manner until I felt the need to visualize thoughts and feelings that were hard for me to express in any other way. Abstraction has been an effective way for me to communicate the visceral and ephemeral, the strange little moments that fuel our inner lives."
- Stephanie Han
Stephanie was born in 1971 in Seoul, South Korea, and emigrated to the U.S. in 1978. Naturally adept at art, she decided she wanted to go to art school and obtained her BFA degree in illustration from the Laguna College of Art and Design in 1995. After working for a few years in the marketing department of a large corporation, she entered the MFA illustration program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where she earned her MFA degree in 1999. She came back out to California soon after graduation and started pursuing a career in painting and graphic design. She currently lives and works in Long Beach, CA.

"Izmir Grove” Event at Sasha’s Saturday, April 23rd
Did you know Long Beach has a sister city in Turkey? The Izmir-Long Beach Sister Cities Association would like to welcome you to their exciting new project – the creation of “Izmir Grove” in Recreation Park in Long Beach.
The Association is working closely with Long Beach based architectural firm Studio-111 and the Parks and Recreation Department to create a friendship park at 7th Street and Park Avenue. This grove will commemorate the friendship between these two cities and their communities.
Olive trees have been selected as a universal symbol of peace. The tranquil contemporary Mediterranean garden manifests the spirit of Turkey and all its many splendors. Several elements of the friendship garden, such as the benches, will be fabricated in Turkey out of natural stones quarried from the Izmir region.
We were delighted to introduce this endeavor to the Long Beach community. Dennis Aytekin says, “ this project is an opportunity to partner our cities, open the doors of goodwill and friendship between our peoples and make a difference in world peace and global understanding.”
